Rita’s will dole out free ice cream treats today, March 20 to celebrate the first day of spring. Last year, over 1 million cups of free Italian Ice were given out on this day of “ice, custard and happiness.”
Rita’s Italian Ice was started by a firefighter, Bob Tumolo, in 1984, who named the company after his wife, Rita. The company started as a small Italian ice stand on Tumolo’s front porch and has grown to over 600 stores. The first day of spring (FDOS) giveaway has been an annual tradition for the company since 1992.
